What is your profession?
I am a professional photographer for Harris Publishing, Inc., a small publishing company located in eastern Idaho. Harris publishes a little over a dozen specialty niche magazines covering everything from boating to skateboarding, and snow machining to potato growing.

What is/are your specialty(ies)?
Photojournalism, portraiture and sports are my strongest specialties, but I am a generalist at my job and have to photograph many different genres to meet our magazines’ needs.

How long have you been in business?
I have been a professional photographer for 7 years.

Are you freelance or an employee?
I am a staff photographer at Harris and do occasional freelance as time permits.

What professional advice can you give to others who are pursuing a similar career?
Be passionate about what you want to do in life. If you don’t have a passion it shows. My wife often teases me that I live, eat and breathe photography. I admit that I do, almost to a fault, but without that drive I would not be fortunate to be making a living doing what I love. Keep a good attitude, strive for excellence and always try to grow as a photographer and as a person.

What work are you most proud of?
I am always most proud of my most recent work.

Have you won any awards?
I won a couple of awards in college and a few regional awards as a professional photographer, but nothing nationally or internationally. I think awards are great for peer recognition, career advancement, and one’s ego, but not essential to having a successful career and loving what you do. There are great photographers who never get any recognition, but deserve it nonetheless.

Have you received any media attention?
Recently I was selected to be featured on Nikon’s professional web site (www.nikonpro.com) as an up and coming photographer. The exposure has been great and I am honored that Nikon chose my work to be showcased in their “Up Front” feature.

How did you hear about BBB?
I subscribe to Photo District News, was in the market for a web developer, and saw Big Black Bag’s advertisement.

What were your first impressions of BBB?
My first impressions were great and continue to be great. The user friendly interface and the ability to control the overall look of your Web site are invaluable. I love the fact that I can update my Web site with pictures at anytime, within minutes and without any problems. It is simple and easy. Very important for a photographer that wants control and does not want to learn HTML, Flash or any other web development program. After all, I am a photographer and not a web developer.

What keeps you using BBB?
Ease of use and cost.

What web solution were you using before?
My friend in Seattle was developing my Web site, which I designed, using Flash and HTML. The design was perfect for me, but I hated the fact that I had to learn Flash in order to update pictures or add galleries to my Web site. I do not want to write code, I want to be creative. On top of all this, the site would cost about $4000.00 to develop. Way more than I wanted to spend.

How does BBB differ?
I love the fact that I can easily update my web site with pictures at anytime, within minutes and without any problems using Big Black Bag. It is simple and easy. Very important for a photographer that wants control and does not want to learn HTML, Flash or any other web development program. The cost is also drastically less. At under $200 a year one can not find a better price.

How easy/hard would you rate using BBB on a scale of 1 to 10 (10 being easiest)?
I would have to say that Big Black Bag is a 10 on ease of use. Anyone who knows how to operate a computer can easily put together a web site using Big Black Bag. As the old adage goes, “you can teach a monkey to use Big Black Bag.

What features do you use most?
When I first purchased my Web site I wanted a place I could showcase my work. I’ve accomplished that, but I like the fact that Big Black Bag is aggressive and updates its program, on a regular basis, to offer better services. As I grow my business I know I’ll utilize their other features.

What is your favorite thing about BBB?
The ease of use is my favorite thing about Big Black Bag.

On a scale of 1 to 10 how would you rate BBB?s support (10 being the best)?
In 10 months of service from Big Black Bag I have not had any technical problems. When I have had questions in the past I have either emailed or telephoned, depending on the urgency, and have had answers immediately. I’d have to rate, without question, Big Black Bag’s support as a 10.

On a scale of 1 to 10, how would you rate the value of BBB (10 being the best)?
Value is also a 10. For the services Big Black Bag offers I don’t think anyone is less expensive.

Understand what your client/audience is looking for. What style they are partial to and design for them, not yourself.

I'm so proud of Kids' Delicious magazine. A colleague approached me with the concept for this new magazine last year. The idea was to create a food magazine for children with the intent to foster food literacy among young people, helping them to establish a healthy and rewarding relationship with what they eat.

Have you won any awards?
Yes. I've been honored by the Society of Publication Designers: 2 Cover design merits and Feature design merit. Both are for Food Arts magazine where I have been the Art Director for six years. I've also won several print quality awards.

I was sent an email with an introductory offer.

What were your first impressions of BBB?
First impressions: What's the catch? Are they really going to give me that much memory for the price? And I can design my own home page?... I thought, there's definitely got to be a catch.

What keeps you using BBB?
There were no catches. I got to design my own home page, pick my own url, I can upload files to clients in a matter of minutes, update my website at my convenience. Problems are solved as quickly as possible and I'm always given straight answers from tech support. For someone who doesn't have a lot of time, it's the most I could ever expect for the cost of the service.

Portfolios.com

How does BBB differ?
I was only allowed a certain amount of uploads. I didn't have a home page or my own url. If someone wanted to find me, they had to go through portfolios.com to find me (and then there's the risk they'll start looking through other people's portfolios...)

How easy/hard would you rate using BBB on a scale of 1 to 10 (10 being easiest)?
It's very easy. I'd give it a 7. It's always overwhelming compiling your digital portfolio, but BBB takes you through creating your home page in small steps. They supply the framework that allows you to customize it into your own identity. After you get the hang of it, maintenance is easily a 10.

What features do you use most?
I use portfolio the most. When I'm trying to get a job, it's so easy to paste my url into an email and send it to the client.

What is your favorite thing about BBB?
Having my own url. Nothing beats that. I hated being part of a pool of designers.

On a scale of 1 to 10 how would you rate BBB?s support (10 being the best)?
Definitely a 9. They've always responded either immediately or at least within 24 hours of a problem. They've always been honest and fair.

Start off working in an advertising agency or a design studio for a few years before you decide to go freelance. Get to know the people that could ultimately become your potential clients and learn what they expect from you.

You should be proud enough of most of your work. But don't forget, ultimately its purpose is to sell something for someone, so it's no use to be self-indulgent about it.

I've been involved in a few advertising campaigns that have won awards, but I don't enter competitions myself. I don't really see the point, it boils down to the fact that ultimately someone's making money out of your vanity.

You agree that all information You present and all Media You display in Your Web Site is Your own responsibility and that BBB is not responsible for it in any capacity, including but not limited to Media that infringes on copyrights, model rights or property owners' rights. You further agree to compensate BBB for any and all legal, court and damages fees that BBB may have to pay as a result of displaying any Media that appears in Your Web Site.

E. You agree to not display any pornographic, libel or slanderous Media in Your Web Site.

F. You agree that BBB is not responsible for, nor guarantees, that any other technology, services, plug-ins or software will work with BBB websites services. Furthermore, should You use any other technology, service, plug-in or software in combination with the services and software provided by BBB and it is determined that these break, slow down, compromise security or otherwise disrupt BBB's service offerings, You agree that BBB can remove or have You remove said technology, service, plug-in or software as soon as BBB deems necessary.

2. DOMAIN NAMES
A. You agree that any domain name purchased on Your behalf will be purchased in BBB's name but You will be entitled to its ownership at any time under the following conditions:
i) Your account is in good standing.
ii) You request your domain at least 30 days prior to your account expiring.
iii) You agree to take ownership of the domain within 14 days of requesting to do so. If You do not take ownership of the domain name within that time frame, any fees BBB incurs due to a domain name auto renewal will be incurred by You.
iiii) You agree to pay the registrar's fee when making the transfer.

B. If BBB purchased your domain for You and if You renew your account later than 14 days after Your subscription has expired, You agree that You will pay BBB $75.00 to remove Your domain from its "redemption" status with our domain registrar.

C. If BBB purchased a domain name on Your behalf, You agree to notify BBB of your intent to not renew Your subscription at least 14 days prior to your subscription ending date so BBB has enough time to stop the domain from auto-renewing. Should you fail to notify BBB within this time frame, You agree to pay BBB $12 to reimburse BBB for the cost of renewing the domain.

D. You agree to pay BBB a one-time $25 fee for any additional domain name changes that BBB makes at Your request after Your initial account has been set-up, this includes adding additional domain names, domain forwarding, domain redirecting or deleting a domain name. This does not include the cost to purchase a new domain on Your behalf.

3. EMAIL
A. You agree to never send unsolicited email using BBB's system or services. You also agree to respect any recipient's request to not receive emails from You. Furthermore You agree that BBB can suspend Your email privileges or Website at anytime without compensation if BBB determines that You are abusing BBB's email system or services.

4. AGREEMENT
A. BBB has the right to alter this agreement at anytime so long as You have been notified within 1 day of doing so. You will continue to act under the old agreement for a period of 15 days. If You do not make objections to the new agreement in writing or by email within 15 days from the date of notification, Your silence will be an indication that You have accepted to act under the new agreement.
